"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood."

The Roman Avery Academy Program

Our curriculum goes beyond Ohio’s state standards to provide a knowledge-rich, well-rounded education that supports both academic excellence and personal growth. At Roman Avery Academy, we focus on educating the whole child by creating an environment that nurtures creativity, curiosity, and confidence. Students don’t just sit at desks—they actively explore, investigate, and engage with the world around them as they move through the stages of our learning journey. We invite you to visit our campus and see why our students love coming to school each day.

Financial aid is available through the EdChoice Traditional and EdChoice Expansion Scholarships.

The Academy Learning Journey

The Roman Avery Academy Program serves students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, guiding them through four important stages of learning: Discover, Explore, Investigate, and Engage.

Each stage reflects how students naturally grow as learners. As they move through the Academy program, students build strong academic foundations while developing independence, critical thinking, and confidence.

Our educators intentionally design learning experiences that help students ask questions, explore ideas, analyze information, and actively engage with the world around them.

Academy Stages

Discover | Kindergarten–1st Grade
Students begin building foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics while developing confidence and curiosity as learners.

Explore | Grades 2–3
Students expand their understanding by asking deeper questions, making connections across subjects, and developing greater independence.

Investigate | Grades 4–5
Students develop critical thinking and research skills as they begin exploring ideas more deeply through projects, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Engage | Grades 6–8
Students take a more active role in their learning by applying knowledge, developing leadership skills, and engaging with more complex academic challenges.

Ignite | Grades 9-10 - coming soon, 2028 school year

The Academy years prepare students for the next stage of the Roman Avery Learning Journey: Ignite.

Roman Avery Academy currently serves students through 8th grade, with plans to expand our program to include high school beginning in 2028. This expansion will allow students to continue progressing through the final stages of our learning journey—Ignite (Grades 9–10) and Launch (Grades 11–12)—within the same supportive community and educational philosophy.

“Our goal is to guide students from their first Spark of curiosity all the way to Launch.”

Academy Program: Discover → Engage (Kindergarten–8th Grade)

Children entering the Discover Stage (Kindergarten) must be 5 years old to enter the program.

All students entering Roman Avery Academy participate in a readiness assessment. This helps us understand each student’s strengths, learning style, and academic needs so we can ensure proper placement and provide the support necessary for success.

Student Readiness & Placement Assessment

At Roman Avery Academy, we want every student to begin their learning journey in the environment where they will thrive. As part of the admissions process, all prospective students participate in a readiness and placement assessment.

This assessment helps our educators understand each student’s:

• Current academic skills
• Learning style and strengths
• Areas where additional support may be beneficial

The goal of this process is not to create pressure for students, but to ensure that each child is placed in the stage of learning where they can grow with confidence and success.

For younger students, this may include a classroom visit or developmental observation, while older students may complete a short academic assessment.

This thoughtful approach allows us to support every student as they begin their journey through the Roman Avery stages of learning.
